STILL POPPING OUT AND SHOWING FOLKS

HIP-HOP

Just when a certain Canadian thought the coast was clear, The Boogeyman appears. It’s been a few months since Not Like Us dropped and took the world by storm. All summer, men, women, and children alike could be heard chanting WOP WOP WOP WOP WOP in unison as the world danced over Kendrick's now iconic diss track.

But Drake did not go quiet into that good night. He was seen worldwide at different venues, islands, and parties (we’ll get there soon). He even dropped new music and footage from some projects and collabs he’s had stored in the vault.

On Sunday, coupled with the start of the NFL regular season, Kendrick dropped a video announcing that he will be headlining the Super Bowl Halftime Show. The video was riddled with jabs and comments aimed at Drake, one of the most notable being “You only get one shot at a championship, no round 2’s”. A comment in direct response to a previous Drake statement claiming he’d bounce back against K Dot in “Game 2”.

Around 8:30 Wednesday night, Kendrick Lamar dropped a 5-minute track on his Instagram with the image of a pair of black air forces, the colloquial symbol of aggressive behavior. The song opens over a melodic sample that immediately feels heavy and somber. His tone throughout feels akin to his tone in Meet The Grahams. Kendrick takes shots at Drake, Akademiks & others. The line watch the party die is repeated several times in the song while he questions Drake and his team parting too much, Akademiks unwavering support for Drizzy going as far as calling him a d**k rider.

Kendrick calls out clown behavior and again questions Aubrey’s moral values. K Dot positions himself on the moral high ground but still wonders what Lacrae (a prominent Christian rapper) would do, thus denoting that there is still room for growth. Kendrick set out on a mission to challenge Drake at every turn “Headshots for the year, you better walk around like Daft Punk”, and with this new track, Kendrick Lamar seems to be bent on delivering as promised.
